FAIRs Care Challenges County Fairs to Fight Hunger

Hunger is a serious issue that directly impacts Hoosiers across the state. One in six Hoosiers and one in four Hoosier children are at risk of hunger. Approximately 695,000 people, including 296,000 children, receive emergency food each year through the member food banks of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry.

The Indiana State Fair has partnered with the Indiana Association of Fairs (INAF), Elanco, Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. and Feeding Indiana’s Hungry (FIsH) to launch FAIRs Care in hopes of addressing some of these troubling statistics. FAIRs Care (Feeding All Indiana’s Hungry) taps the passion and ingenuity of county fairs to raise awareness of local hunger, help feed Hoosiers and ensure impact is felt statewide. The fair community donated nearly 500 food items and $1,300 during the initial FAIRs Care launch at the INAF Conference in January. County Fairs are now asked to plan and implement a food drive this summer. Working with designated food banks, the donations collected during each fair will be distributed to the local communities. Participating fairs will receive an allotment of Indiana State Fair tickets to help incentivize donations. They will also be entered into a drawing to win $500 that can be used to offset costs of future hunger initiatives.

Help fight hunger in Indiana. Register your county fair to participate in FAIRs Care. Fairs will be asked to submit an application by May 15 and a final report by August 12 to qualify for the drawing. More information is available at http://www.in.gov/statefair/fair/contests/2437.html.
